Application Deadlines

We have 3 application deadlines and recommend that candidates apply by the earliest deadline possible. Most applications arrive by the January 12 deadline but you should apply by December 8 if you will be abroad in the spring. Many opportunities are still available in March but applicants must be ready to move quickly if an offer is made.

Minimum Requirements of Employment

  • All Overland employees must have a valid driver's license and excellent driving record.
  • Employment at Overland requires the ability to perform physical tasks requiring strength, endurance and coordination. Applicants should be able to lift at least forty pounds, walk or run for sustained periods of time on varying terrain and be comfortable sleeping outside in tents.
  • Applicants who are not US citizens must obtain a J-1 Visa if hired. All applicants must speak English with fluency and ease.

We hope to be in touch with candidates within two weeks of the application deadline.  Strong candidates will be asked to submit additional information. Finalist interviews typically take place between December and March.

Dates of Employment:

  • Leader training for all staff begins the week of June 14 in Williamstown, Mass. 
  • Leaders will finish in Williamstown on August 10, 2015.

Leader Compensation:

  • Salary for first year leaders is $1800 (returning leaders receive raises for each additional summer).
  • All program expenses are covered by Overland (transportation and flights from our base in Williamstown to the trip start and end locations, all accommodations, all meals, all activities).
  • Overland offers pro deals and industry discounts to leaders through ProMotive, Outdoor ProLink, and specific brands like Trek and Cannondale.
  • Overland partially reimburses hired staff for required medical certifications and travel expenses to and/or from leader training in Williamstown.

Chris McAlister coordinates leader paperwork, handles background checks, approves leader certifications and organizes leader arrivals for training.  She has worked closely with Jonathan for 7 years helping Overland bring together a team of qualified and prepared leaders each summer.
