We expect to receive 500 to 600 applications, interview about 250 finalists and hire about 60 to 70 first-year leaders. With over 130 staff each summer there is a wide range of talents, experiences and personalities at Overland. There are some common traits, however, that all Overland leaders share. These include leadership experience, prior work with kids, a positive outlook and the capacity to work hard. Overland leaders are role models for their students, naturally modeling the values of teamwork, consideration and determination. We consider an applicant's teamwork skills and focus on working with young people of utmost importance. Leaders for our language programs must be fluent in French or Spanish.
Overland will place you on a program based on your age, leadership experience, outdoor, community service or language experience, relevant skills and interests. Returning leaders tend to fill most international programs and many of the Western programs, while first-year leaders will often lead in the East. Younger applicants generally start by working support here in Williamstown.
All Overland staff must be certified in CPR and lifesaving. All support staff, outdoor leaders and community service leaders in Alaska and the Rockies must have Wilderness First Aid; all other service and language leaders need Basic First Aid training (Red Cross or equivalent). These are minimum standards--applicants with more extensive first aid training should be certain to highlight their current and/or planned (before the summer) certifications. Overland provides lifesaving training to all staff just prior to leader training in June. Overland reimburses staff for CPR (up to $25), Basic First Aid (up to $50) and Wilderness First Aid (up to $150).
Leaders training for all staff will begin in Williamstown, MA in mid-June. All staff finish in Williamstown in either late July or early August, depending on the specific assignment.
Overland provides housing/camping, meals, and salary for all staff (airfare from Williamstown to the start of your program and back to Williamstown at the end of your program is included for those leaders who lead outside the east coast). The salary range for first-year staff is $1100 to $1400 (returning staff receive a pay increase). Overland provides group gear (e.g., tents and stoves); leaders provide their own personal equipment including bicycles and backpacks. Leaders can borrow bicycles from Overland for the summer and can also receive pro-deal discounts on bicycles (Cannondale and Trek). Leaders are responsible for loss or damage to their personal gear/bicycles during their trip (e.g., maintenance and repairs). Overland provides workers' compensation and general liability protection.
