Our trip begins with a short afternoon hike to stretch our legs and get to know each other. Then we’ll travel to New Hampshire’s beautiful Lake Sunapee region for hiking, swimming and camping. Our challenge hike up Mount Monadnock will allow a rewarding six-state view from the summit. Biking on the bike paths and quiet back roads of Martha’s Vineyard, visiting bustling Vineyard Haven and classic Edgartown, picnic lunches and afternoons at the beach will fill our days. O ur final activity on the island will be an afternoon exploring the picturesque coastline by sea kayak.
At trip’s end, we’ll enjoy a day of rafting on the Deerfield River, and then return to Williamstown to look back on all of our achievements on Mountains & Sea Adventure.

“One of the things that we like best about Overland is the terrific role models you provide for the students.” Andrea Ward, Wellesley, Massachusetts
Mountains & Sea Adventure begins in Williamstown, Massachusetts. For those who fly, we'll pick you up at Albany, NY Airport; for those who are dropped off, we'll meet on the Williams College campus.
On our first afternoon together, our short orientation will focus on getting to know each other. Our group will include two leaders—always a male and a female—and up to 12 students (never more). Our small group makes for close friendships and fun during our summer adventure together. We'll spend a day in Williamstown to get acquainted and go on some short hikes and bike rides to prepare for the adventures to come.
We'll travel by van to New Hampshire's Lake Sunapee region where we'll spend a few days hiking, swimming and camping. Our mornings will be spent on the trail as we explore the countryside. In the afternoons, we'll swim in beautiful Lake Sunapee, play games, and bond as a group before we return to camp for dinner and dessert. After a few day hikes, we'll be ready to tackle Mount Monadnock, at 3,165 feet. We'll have lunch on the summit as we enjoy the rewarding six-state, 360 degree view of New England.
We'll travel to Cape Cod by van and take a ferry from Woods Hole, Massachusetts, to Martha's Vineyard. We'll ride our bikes to the Martha's Vineyard Hostel, ideally situated along the bike trail. Our daily bike rides will take us to classic seaports, charming towns and long stretches of white sand—perfect for an afternoon of swimming and games. The terrain is generally rolling as we ride quiet roads and bike paths and explore bustling Vineyard Haven and picturesque Edgartown. For a change of pace, we'll spend a day enjoying the island's coast by sea kayak. Experienced guides will teach us the basics of kayaking as we paddle through sheltered coves and inlets.
On our way back to Williamstown, we'll stop for a final adventure on the Deefield River. Perfect for beginners, this class III river offers an ideal balance between exciting rapids and calm water where we can cool off with a refreshing swim.
We'll head back to Williamstown and spend our last night celebrating our two weeks of fun and discovery. All in all the perfect introduction to summer adventures with Overland!
"My favorite part was the wonderful views that we were rewarded with on our hikes.” Jess Cordiano, Pound Ridge, New York
This is an introductory trip. The selected activities, their duration and intensity, are designed for adventurous 5th graders. The challenge level is a 2 on a scale of 1-10, where 1 is easiest. While this is an introductory trip designed for some of our younger students, it is essential that parents make a good choice for their child. Every Overland program requires independence, age-appropriate maturity and good fitness.
“Mountains & Sea Adventure gave Caroline a sense on accomplishment.” Paren Hardison, Atlanta, Georgia
Stay active in sports and get out for some walks and rides this spring. The more you prepare, the more you'll enjoy your program and the better able you'll be to hike and ride safely this summer.

Please note the following important policies:
Our programs offer the opportunity to strengthen independence and self-reliance. To maximize these benefits, we do not permit phone calls to or from our students (except in the case of emergency).
If it is important for your son or daughter to be able to call you while en route to Overland, we recommend that you purchase an inexpensive phone card that your son or daughter can use at any airport pay phone.
If you feel that it is necessary to send your son or daughter with a phone, please do not send an expensive smart phone like an iPhone or BlackBerry. Send an inexpensive prepaid cell phone instead. On arrival we will collect all phones but we have found that safeguarding these phones is problematic given that our programs move from place to place. Despite our best efforts over $25,000 in phones have been lost, damaged or stolen in the last two years alone. We regret that due to the expense involved in replacing these items, we take absolutely no responsibility whatsoever for phones, electronics or personal property brought by students and we will not make any reimbursements for lost, damaged or stolen phones, electronics or personal property.

Clair Miller is from Baltimore, Maryland, and is a senior at Denison University in Granville, Ohio, where she is pursuing a sociology/anthropology major and environmental studies minor. Recently, Clair was named a fellow of the sociology/anthropology department. At Denison, Clair plays on the club squash team and is active in the Habitat for Humanity club serving on the executive board as the winter break chair. In this position, Clair plans and leads trips during winter and spring breaks to build houses for those who cannot afford them. She spent last spring break building in Birmingham, Alabama. During her junior fall, Clair studied abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark, where she stayed with a host family and enjoyed trying new foods, seeing lots of cool places and experiencing a different culture. She enjoys many outdoor activities like playing tennis, hiking and rock climbing. In 2011, Clair led Mountains & Sea Adventure. She writes, “One of the most memorable moments of every trip is the last day. As a leader, you know that you have done your job well when you look at the cohesive group of kids who have grown so close in such a short time. Then you compare them to the awkward, unsure group who arrived on the first day. At the end of the trip, all they talk about is the fun that they have had together."
