Service Programs At A Glance
New England Service
Two weeks, starts and ends in Williamstown, Massachusetts. Community building in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts. Projects include Overland's Reading & Recreation Summer Camp for children in need (we'll work with kids from 7 to 9 years old, helping them to improve their reading skills and instilling a love of learning), doing trail work on the local trail system and volunteering for a river cleanup. 9th - 12th grade. 6/22 to 7/4 and 7/6 to 7/18 and 7/20 to 8/1. $2995 (airfare not included).
Southwest Service
Two weeks, starts and ends in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Santa Fe is our base for service in this beautiful but poor corner of the U.S. We'll volunteer at the Santa Fe Boys & Girls Club, reaching out to youngsters from underprivileged Native American and Hispanic communities; we'll also seek out opportunities for service to improve the land and natural rescources of the area. 8th - 12th grade. 6/22 to 7/4 and 7/6 to 7/18 and 7/20 to 8/1. $2995 (airfare not included).
Hawaii Service
Three weeks, starts and ends in Honolulu. Hawaii is famous for its physical and cultural beauty; less recognized are Hawaii's vast human and environmental needs. We'll work with organizations on Oahu in both urban and rural areas, volunteering with local children and doing vigorous conservation and trail work to protect the island's fragile ecosystem! 9th - 12th grade. 6/22 to 7/11 and 7/13 to 8/1. $4395 (airfare not included).
Alaska Service
Three weeks, starts and ends in Juneau. Alaska allows us to combine our love of the outdoors with our desire to give back to others and to the environment. We'll spend three days at the beginning of our trip on a series of day hikes and then spend the next 10 days working to improve the trail systems around Juneau. We'll learn about Alaska's cultural heritage, visit a local fish hatchery, explore Juneau and spend three days sea kayaking on Berners Bay. 9th - 12th grade. 6/23 to 7/12 and 7/14 to 8/2. $3895 (airfare not included).
Rockies Service
Three weeks, starts and ends in Denver. We'll begin with a three-day backpacking trip in the Rockies; then we'll dedicate the next 10 days to building a section of the Continental Divide Trail. Our long days of demanding trail work will be rewarded when we hike out on the section of trail we have built--a trail that will be part of the CDT forever. We'll end with a hike to the top of one of Colorado's 14ers and a rafting trip on the Arkansas River. 9th - 12th grade. 6/22 to 7/11 and 7/13 to 8/1. $3995 (airfare not included).
Virgin Islands Service
Three weeks, starts in St. Croix and ends in St. Thomas. We'll spend two weeks volunteering with local organizations that serve St. Croix's disadvantaged populations. For the third week of our program, we will travel to the island of St. John, where we will work with the National Park Service to help maintain and protect the Virgin Islands National Park's fragile ecosystem, cleaning beaches and repairing hiking trails. 9th-12th grade. 6/22 to 7/11 and 7/13 to 8/1. $4395 (airfare not included).
Costa Rica Service
Three weeks, starts and ends in San José, Costa Rica. We'll begin with an intensive day of language immersion and then jump into our service projects in the town of San Isidro de Coronado; working at an understaffed orphanage, a day care center and a center for individuals with Down Syndrome. We'll have a chance to raft the Pacuare River, visit the Volcán Arenal and travel to the Caribbean Coast to the town of Volio to volunteer with the Costa Rican Humanitarian Foundation. 9th-12th grade (a minimum of one year of high school Spanish is required). 6/22 to 7/11 and 7/13 to 8/1. $4395 (airfare not included).
Language & Service Costa Rica, Three Weeks for 8th & 9th Graders
Three weeks, starts and ends in San José, Costa Rica. We'll spend three weeks with an unbeatable combination of native-speaker, classroom-based language instruction and meaningful community service projects to help disadvantaged Costa Rican communitities and preserve the country's spectacular natural beauty. L & S Costa Rica: Three Weeks includes travel to explore many parts of this wonderful and unique country, opportunities to practice and strengthen language skills, a week-long homestay and a rafting trip down the exciting Pacuare River. 8th & 9th graders. 6/22 to 7/11 and 7/13 to 8/1. $5395 (airfare not included). Please note that a minimum of one year of Spanish is required for Language & Service Costa Rica.
